If you’re anything like me, then nothing gets your day started like a piping hot cup of the black stuff. I personally enjoy waking up solely for the fact that I enjoy my morning coffee so much. If no coffee is available to me, you can bet your ass that I am not going to be looking forward to being conscious for the rest of the day. I can drink nearly a pot to myself when I decide to brew from home and I wouldn’t be a true Canadian if I didn’t enjoy the odd cup of Joe from my local Tim Horton’s either.
Besides convenience, sometimes the urge to go out for coffee stems from the fact that home-brewed coffee can be a little repetitive and boring at times. Flavored coffees can provide a nice alternative to plain old coffee grounds but they also tend to be packed full of artificial flavors and other questionable ingredients. So what is a caffeine addict to do when they find themselves confronted with a flavor predicament?
Well, I’ve recently discovered the wonder of adding ingredients to my coffee grinds before brewing and the results have been really quite positive! So, think about trying a few of these ingredients to your grinds the next time you go to brew that next pot of coffee.
Mellow it Out with a Pinch of Salt
Adding a pinch of salt to your coffee grinds before you brew is the least dramatic way to alter your next cup of magic, but it can help to nullify some of the bitterness from really strong tasting or slightly stale grounds. Just a little bit will do, try pairing this option up with one or two other ingredients from this list to really make an interesting blend for your next morning wake up call.
Spice It Up with a Dash of Cinnamon or Nutmeg
Try adding a dash of Cinnamon, Nutmeg or Pumpkin Spice to the top of your grinds the next time you brew a big old pot of coffee at home. These spices can add some unique flavor profiles to your usual brew, paired with a pinch of salt, these ingredients can completely change the flavor of that next pot of coffee; A stick of cinnamon to the top of your grinds can also be a great way to infuse that pot with cinnamon flavors.
Use Extracts to Add some Punch to your Coffee Grounds
Natural and Artificial flavor extracts can be another way to add some flavor to your morning elixir. Almond Extracts, mint extracts and vanilla extracts are just a few that spring to my mind when I’m thinking of my favorites. A few drops to the top of your grinds will do it, don’t add too much and adjust as needed to find the perfect blend of flavors for yourself.
Mocha It Up with Cocoa Powder
If you’re feeling experimental the next time you’re hitting the coffee maker, add approximately a half tbsp of Cocoa Powder to your grinds. Adjust as necessary and enjoy a light homemade Mocha blend.
With all of these ingredients, it’s best to start off small with your quantities and watch how your coffee maker reacts. The water should still be able to flow freely enough to pass through the filter without becoming overly muddy or clogged. Personally, I haven’t had any problems with this myself, but it’s possible that with too many added ingredients or the wrong coffee maker, the water could have difficulties passing through and backing up. So flavor those coffee grounds with caution and the best of your sensibilities.
