“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” – Henry David Thoreau
I thought I’d just do something light and fun for today’s post. Something I’ve not done before. Music is inspiring and motivating. Music can move you in the same way that art can move you. The same way that a powerful article or movie can move you.
There have been some hard times in my life, and my music often helped me through. I used to spend a lot more time then I do now with headphones in my ears escaping my reality or looking for comfort in someone else’s words. I wanted to try to pick 5 songs that have been important to my life in some way and to share those with you.
Five Songs To Sum Up My Life
1 – Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi
Reason: It’s the tale of a man suffering his own afflictions and looking for his happiness along the way. Nothing’s going to stop him no matter how long it takes or how fucked up he is by the time he gets there. He will overcome. This has been my favorite song since I’ve discovered it a few years back. The anthem of my life.
“People told me slow my roll
I’m screaming out fuck that
I’m a do just what I want
Looking ahead no turning back
If I fall if I die
Know I lived it to the fullest
If I fall if I die
Know I lived and missed some bullets”
2 – Ain’t No Man by The Avett Brothers
Reason: This song is purely upbeat and it sends a really great message about how if you live from your heart with integrity no one can keep you under their thumb. Care about others and yourself. Live by your conscience and principles. You’ll be unbreakable. This one usually makes me feel pretty good.
“There ain’t no man that can save me
There ain’t no man that can enslave me
Ain’t no man or men that can change the shape my soul is in
There ain’t nobody here
Who can cause me pain or raise my fear ’cause I got only love to share
If you’re looking for truth I’m proof you’ll find it there”
3 – “The Emotions” by B0rns
Reason: My music selection wouldn’t be complete without at least one tragically sad song in it! I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I do tend to enjoy spending some of my time wallowing in very emotional states. On occasion I may even shed a tear while writing, but if you tell anybody, I’ll deny it!
“The emotion is suddenly out of me
The emotion is building up inside of me
And what you’re looking for is suddenly out of reach
The emotion, the emotion”
4 – “Society” by Eddie Vedder
Reason: Society tells the tale of Christopher McCandless from Into the Wild and how he rejected traditional society roles. (I wrote a post about it being my favorite movie once). I feel like I’ve related to this way of living contrary to societal norms.
More than you need
Until you have it all you won’t be free
I hope you’re not lonely without me”
5 – “Soon it will be cold enough” by Emancipator
Reason: My collection wouldn’t be complete without one song by Emancipator, because I love them to death and there are times in my life that are just too hard to describe with words. Emancipator is purely instrumental, sometimes with some human “noises” thrown in but not exactly singing. Fantastic background music for life and writing.
Afterthoughts
Well there you have it. Five songs that sum up my life. Maybe you’ve learned something about me. If you ever catch me in the streets, or at the gym, I’m almost always listening to my music player because that’s my happy place. 🙂
Yes, it did help me know you a lot! Whatever, however you are, you are THE BEST!
Thank you for bringing me to these songs!
Lots of love and warm regards,
Take care! 🙂 ❤

It’s funny, the only one I’d ever heard before reading this post was the Eddie Vedder song, because of its connection to Into the Wild.

The entire Into The Wild soundtrack was written by him and it’s all gold. Would highly recommend it.

Oh my emotions… well, what to say… no…
fun and light…. Thank you for sharing, and behind that music and behind those words and behind your words and behind your soul in your eyes… you are deep, so deep, so no one can follow in the depths… maybe…
I wish you a great day🌸

Yes. I have shared many pieces of music that speaks to me & has helped shape me into the woman I am today. It’s hard though, I connect to music on a very deep level. I just want to share everything! Lol.
